Thimble Fingers was created by Julie Macdonald in 2000, at a time when she was living in Singapore and the opportunity arose for her to pass on her embroidery skills by teaching embroidery in Asia. In 2001 she returned to Australia and hasn’t looked back since.
Thimble Fingers is a home based mail order business, operating out of a small home studio in Julie’s garden at Meadow Springs, Mandurah in Western Australia.
At Thimble Fingers you can attend classes to learn the techniques of stumpwork, surface embroidery and more, and also purchase embroidery supplies. However, as it is a home based business, we would appreciate if you could telephone for an appointment prior to visiting the premises, as it is not operated as a shop open to the public, nor is it run on regular hours.
Since 2000 Julie has returned to Singapore numerous times and taught hundreds of ladies from Singapore, India, Indonesia and Malaysia how to create her designs. She has also conducted classes at numerous craft shops in Western Australia, as well as at her Thimble Fingers studio.
In 2012 Julie obtained her City and Guilds Embroidery I, Certificate in Textile Design, through distance learning with the School of Stitched Textiles in Britain. Through this intensive course Julie has expanded her experience of traditional embroidery techniques to include a modern approach to embroidery and textiles.
Julie has an extensive collection of antique Asian textiles, and has displayed and discussed the origins and history of these pieces at many textile, antique and collectors groups.
Julie is an active member of two textile art groups: Art a’Peel in the Mandurah region; and TAAMMI (Textile Arts & Mixed Media Inc) based in Melville, of which she currently holds position of Secretary on Committee.
